Sustainable Las Vegas will be holding their 3rd Annual Sustainable Homes
Tour (formerly Solar Homes Tour) on Saturday, January 22, from 10 am to
4 pm. The self-paced of four sites features a variety of renewable
energy techniques and conservation measures. These examples range from
very low- to higher-tech: drying clothes on clotheslines, rainwater
catchment, passive solar water and space heating, photovoltaic
installations, etc.
The tour will begin at 10 am with a free "weatherization" demonstration,
at the Las Vegas Arts Council building at 140 Bridge Street. The public
is invited to come and learn simple ways to save energy dollars in their
homes. A map of the tour will be available there.

Solar Nation Action Alert: A special deal for the holidays - ASES
membership at a steep discount!
Join the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) before the end of January for less than two-thirds of the regular price!
ASES is the foremost nonprofit association of solar advocates, educators, legislators, and professionals in the United States.
It's where people interested in solar go to learn more; where people looking to install solar go to find professionals in their area and where
those professionals go to stay informed, build connections and join technical groups.
Established in 1954, ASES has provided educational opportunities for professionals and advocates, helped shape policy both locally and nationally,
and produced the award-winning SOLAR TODAY magazine.
As ASES Board member Nate Mitten says, "ASES was proclaiming the promise of renewable energy a long, long time before 'green' was mainstream."
SOLAR TODAY magazine connects you to the leading solar energy experts. FINDSOLAR locates solar installers and tells you about solar incentives.
The ASES NATIONAL SOLAR CONFERENCE is America's leading educational conference for solar energy professionals. The ASES NATIONAL
SOLAR TOUR is the world's largest grassroots solar energy event.
You can join in one of two ways:
* As a Member for $25 (regularly $39/yr)

FEBRUARY 2: Presentation by Green Fire Times Magazine Founder, Anna
Hansen - /Los Alamos, NM
/*7pm at Mesa Public Library (upstairs)
/Green Fire Times/ is an exciting monthly sustainability magazine coming
out of Santa Fe and covering Northern New Mexico. We are excited to have
Anna Hansen, the Art Director and one of the founding members speak in
Los Alamos in February. After providing a brief history of the magazine,
she will focus on building sustainable communities, educating the
citizenry on the importance of sustainable living, and the role that she
sees Green Fire Times playing in this.
/Green Fire Times/ provides useful information for anyone – community
members, businesspeople, students, visitors – interested in discovering
the wealth of opportunities and resources available in our region.
Knowledgeable people provide articles on subjects ranging from green
businesses, products, services, entrepreneurship, jobs, design,
building, energy, and investing – to sustainable agriculture, arts &
culture, ecotourism, education, food, the healing arts, local heroes,
native perspectives, natural resources, recycling, transportation, and
more.
Recent issues of Green Fire Times have featured writing by many noted
local authors, including Los Alamos’s own Gerald Ansell.
For those of you who have not seen the magazine, you can pick up a copy
at the Coffee House Café and at the Mesa Public Library. You can also
see it online at http://greenfiretimes.com/ .
This event is being sponsored by both the Sierra Club and the Los Alamos
Sustainable Energy Network (LASE Network).

*FEBRUARY 3-APRIL 14: Climate Master**™ ** **Class **- /Santa Fe, NM/*
/*Registration is required. The deadline to register is February 1, 2011*
/The New Mexico Environment Department will be offering the Climate
Master™ program, an 11-week free series of classes focused on climate
change and what you can do to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions in
your daily life.
Class topics include Climate Change, Home Energy, Water, Transportation,
Green Building, Renewable Energy, Yards, Consumption and Waste, Food,
Sustainable Behavior, and Climate Change Communication. Local experts in
these fields will discuss these topics, climate change, and how to
reduce your greenhouse gas emissions.
Climate Master™ is modeled after the Master Gardener program. This
program is a two-part educational effort, in which community members are
provided 30 hours of training and in return they “pay back” the program
through 30 hours of volunteer service in the year following the training.
On average, students who take the class can reduce their own personal
emissions by approximately 2 tons per year. Individual action is
critical because individuals are the end users of most energy production
via home heating and cooling, appliances, food, travel, and disposable
products. Climate Master™ will provide training, specific tools and
methods that will enable you to join others in making a difference.
This class is limited to the first 25 participants to register. See the
website for application and class details. Confirmation of successful
registration will be sent by email or phone.
