*LEGISLATIVE ALERT:*
SENATE BILL 257, TAX CREDIT:
NMSEA has learned that the proposed legislation for a New Mexico State
tax credit for the installation of solar and other renewable energy
systems is *not moving forward* for passage. This is Senate Bill 257. If
passed, this would add a 10% State tax credit to the 30% Federal credit
that was approved in December, for a total credit of 40%. This would be
a much better incentive for property owners who can afford to make the
investment. Unfortunately, State revenues have fallen, and this credit
would further reduce those revenues. If you feel this is an important
measure for the legislature to consider passing, please contact the
bill's sponsor, Tim Keller, and encourage he and his colleagues to get
this passed. Here is contact information for Senator Keller:

SENATE BILL 647 & HOUSE BILLS 893 and 572, SPECIAL ASSESSMENTS:
These bills are apparently similar and are being considered by the NM
legislature to authorize counties to offer loans to property owners for
solar and other renewable energy installations. The counties would bill
owners along with their annual property tax assessments. Proponents
advocate that this would provide lower loan costs and promote the growth
of these systems. Opponents consider this predatory and are concerned
about county ownership of these systems, possible liens against
property, and a further government entanglement and corruption of
mortgage banks. If you feel these bills deserve your support, you may
contact Representative Brian Egolf, District: 47 County: Santa Fe

NOTE: NMSEA is an advocate for the growth of solar and other renewable
energy (RE) system installations, and wishes to provide information to
its membership on legislative actions. However, NMSEA does not claim to
have a thorough knowledge of the consequences of any legislation and
encourages members to examine proposals for themselves and support
legislation they feel will support the RE industry.
